As dusk slipped out of the sky, the cat of moonlight and shadows sat next to some straggly azalea bushes outside a nondescript suburban house, and waited.
Within a few minutes, the resident human opened the front door and peered cautiously into the darkening street, as if not quite sure why she’d opened the door in the first place.
The cat slipped inside, unseen, its wreath of moonlight and shade shifting to give it maximum camouflage. The human then shut the door carefully, a bewildered look on her face.
She had no idea that her guardian spirit had just arrived.
Backstory: A little story which came to me one evening after this sunset sky when I went out to drop something in the bin and thought I could see little shadows shifting between moonlight and shade. I shared that version in My Ree-Writes newsletter #14: Fresh, and also on some of my social media.
